Hoover Dam //
Across the Colorado River, the Hoover Dam Bypass Bridge is an incredible feat of engineering that will allow for a new route for Highway 93. Visitors come every year in droves to see this gigantic construction and learn some history of the area. Always something new to be learned!
When visiting Hoover Dam or surrounding area, you must stop to see a new bridge being constructed across the famous Colorado River, which will allow a more convenient and less dangerous crossing for Highway 93 traffic. This is the main link between Las Vegas and Phoenix, both of which have had huge population explosions in the years after Hoover Dam was completed.
The official name of the Bridge is the Mike O'Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge, two local citizens who were well known for dedicating themselves for public service. This Hoover Dam bypass will span the river 1500 feet downstream from the dam.
The current span over the Colorado River is inadequate having a narrow roadway with dangerous turns and not good visual for drivers. The new bridge will have four lanes and be the first steel and concrete composite arch bridge in the US. Over 1900 feet long, it will seem to float 840 feet above the river.
For travelers to the area, the structure is an educational experience and should be included on your itinerary for a vacation thrill. The surrounding landscape is exciting enough, but the true ventures of the skills of man show in this bypass and a wonder of skill.
