Yavapai Observation Station

South Rim //
When one considers Wild West history, one cannot forget the famous cowboy films and stage coach rides. The Grand Canyon National Park has become part of that incredible history, including a station at Yavapai Point (observation spot). Located in the South Rim area, the station is now a visitor information center, viewing destination and so much more.
The Yavapai Point Observation Station is located in the Grand Canyon National Park (south). It is a historical remnant of the old Santa Fe Railway system that has become a major attraction for tourists, offering not only excellent scenic panoramas, but information, tours and souvenirs. Its history alone has intrigued one and all, once being a replacement for the old stagecoach route into the park.
Not far from the Grand Canyon Village, in fact, just a short distance away, the station sits as one of the park's most famous ports of call. However, it was not always the final disembarkment point for many travelers who wanted to experience the park's beauty.
In the late 19th century, visitors rode the almost full day journey from Flagstaff, spending an expensive $20 per person to ride a dusty and rough road by stagecoach to get to Grandview Point. There were places to stay, but it was still a very remote destination, not one easily afforded by most people.
By the turn of the 20th century, a railroad was built to replace the road journey, costing only a mere $3.95, affording visitors a much shorter and more comfortable ride. However, it did not go the full way, stopping shy of Grandeur Point, so a hotel was built. Since then the hotel has been replaced with what most people know as the Bright Angel Lodge.
The point is now the best location for seeing the desert and western views. It houses a visitor center, bookstore and varied information brochures about the park's many aspects. Open from 8am until 5pm, the station offers ranger guided tours and discussions, dealing with everything from geology to plant life.
In recent years the station was completely renovated to include major exhibitions and displays, including local fossil samples. However, the best part is that the new center has a huge series of windows that allow visitors to safely and comfortably view the park throughout the year.
