Williams Arizona //
Williams, Arizona is a favorite tourist destination. It is located close to Flagstaff, Sedona, the South Rim of the Grand Canyon and several other Northern Arizona attractions. Williams has modern hotels and motels and unique, historical bed and breakfasts. The downtown area remains a showcase of architecture reminiscent of days gone by.
Founded in the late 1800s by cowboys, Indians, and western pioneers, Williams has retained its rough and rowdy, western character. The saloons are still active, but the brothels and gambling halls no longer exist. Even in the early history of the town, tourists traveled to Williams to see the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. In those early years, the fifty-eight mile trip was made by buckboard or stagecoach. Today, the Grand Canyon Railway and Resort operates a scenic train journey to the South Rim on an old steam-powered rail line.
Tourists are drawn to the town because of its unique western charm and hospitality. Numerous lodging options are available in town, as well as places to dine, a variety of shops and in town attractions.
At an elevation of 7,000 feet, Williams enjoys four separate seasons and is surrounded by thick ponderosa pine forests. Here you will find numerous outdoor activities amidst the scenic attractions including Sycamore Canyon Wilderness, Cataract Lake, Kaibab Lake, Dogtown Lake and White Horse Lake. The area has a ski hill and cross-country ski trails. The Kaibab National Forest provides excellent places for camping, hiking and just enjoying the great outdoors!
