Grand Canyon Airport
Due to its remote location, getting to The Grand Canyon can be part of the adventure of any vacation to this natural wonder. The closest airport to The Grand Canyon is, of course, called the Grand Canyon Airport (GCN). The Aeronautics Division of the State of Arizona is responsible for the operation of the Grand Canyon Airport. It is the only active state-owned airport.
Located in Tusayan, Arizona, The Grand Canyon National Airport is seven miles from the South Rim of the Canyon. Originally constructed to be used as a landing field in 1925, the Grand Canyon National Airport today is the third most active airport in the State of Arizona.
Today's' facilities have not changed much since they were renovated and opened for business in 1967. The Airport is not serviced by any major commercial airline, but does act as the hub for the majority of the scenic air tours of the Grand Canyon. Nearly forty air taxi and commuter carriers do use the airport.
If you arrive at the Grand Canyon Airport and desire to see the Grand Canyon "on the ground", you can use the shuttle service provided that takes visitors from the airport to several locations on the South Rim. The shuttle operates from May through October and a fee is charged. You can obtain current shuttle schedules at the Grand Canyon Airport or at the Backcountry Information Center.
