The Jerome State Historic Park is located close to Jerome that is near Sedona in Arizona. To reach the park you need to get off the State Route 89A on Douglas Road. You can call up 928-634-5381 to contact the park over telephone. Visit the museum to learn more about the local copper mining history.
Though Jerome has lost much of its sheen over the years, but it was not like this always. Particularly after 1876 when copper deposits were discovered in the area. Three prospects first found the copper and they sold their claims to the United Verde Copper Company, who then set up a mining camp and named it after Eugene Jerome – the principal backer of the enterprise. The next important person who needs to be mentioned here is William A. Clark who set up a railroad to transport the copper and reduce freight cost. All these efforts made the company the biggest copper producers in Arizona. And naturally all this had a positive impact on the town of Jerome.
The Jerome State Historic Park museum is located at the Douglas Mansion which is placed on a hill that offers a grand view of the Verde Valley. But the main displays are inside this museum where you can know in detail the mining methods of those days. You will come across antique mining equipment and there is also a video presentation that offers you an insight. In the park there are picnic areas with restrooms and tables too. The architecture of the building is worth a look too.
The park is open from 8.00 in the morning to 5.00 in the evening, all days, except on Christmas.
