SEDONA PLEIN AIR FESTIVAL is a celebration of Sedona's extraordinary beauty as seen through the eyes of 32 of the finest plein air painters in the country. The eight-day festival features artists painting - on the streets, trailheads, creeks and hillsides - capturing on canvas the beauty of Sedona and the beautiful Red Rock Country.
En plein air, French for "in the open air," is a spontaneous art form in which artists respond to the immediacy of the moment, painting scenes that reflect the excitement of ever-changing light, colors and shadows. Plein-air painters work in all kinds of weather and paintings are usually completed in a matter of hours. T
here is no better setting for a plein-air festival than Sedona in late October with the beautiful foliage and crisp autumn air.
Each spring, in early May, the Sedona Visual Artist Coalition, promotes a free public preview of various artists work. At the ceremony to launch this event, one piece of art is displayed which best exemplifies the particular studio and/or artist. This community display assists the event goers in determining which studios they want to tour for the next few days. During the launch of the event, refreshments are served and the majority of the artists are available to answer questions.
During the following days, the public is encouraged to take a self-guided tour to the various locations in Sedona displaying numerous types of art. Information on the location of the various art galleries including maps can be found at hotels, motels, bed and breakfasts, visitor centers and, of course, the Sedona Art Center. Don't miss this wonderful chance to see the artists of Sedona in their natural environment!
