Cathedral Rock

Cathedral Rock is a towering sandstone rock formation at Sedona in Arizona. Tourists must take highway 179 to reach the area and head to the majestic Cathedral rock. The area offers spectacular views of the surroundings and is a popular destination for hikers and adventurers as well. The trails range from moderate to difficult.

If you are a hiker then you are sure to love the rock. However, hiking to the top of the Cathedral Rock can be quite strenuous depending on the trail you have chosen. Be prepared to scale up a number of rock formations and crevices to reach the top of the feature. The easiest trail is to follow the creek bed. The bed has solidified into stair like formations making hiking easier along this trail.

The region is extremely arid and soaring temperatures during the summer makes hiking extremely difficult as the rocks gets heated up. There are hardly any shades along the trail. If you wish to climb the feature during summer, start climbing the formation early in the morning.

There are a few cafes where you can rest after a hard days' climb. If you want to stay overnight, you can do so at one of the several lodges in the area. The lodges also provide information on the different trails you can go on and the various activities at Cathedral Rock.

If you are planning a hiking expedition, do remember to carry adequate water, snacks and apply ample sunscreen to protect yourself from the searing heat.

The rock has finger like formations known as the 'The Lovers'. According to folklore the Great Spirit created the rocks, after witnessing two lovers constantly bickering with each other.
