Desert safety centers on the rapid changes of weather, the rugged, remote terrain and the long distances related to travel, hiking and touring in the vast area in and around the Grand Canyon.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

The Northern Plateau of Northern Arizona provides multiple choices for hiking, auto touring and other outdoor activities. As is always the case, visitors should check current weather conditions before visiting this vast and rugged area. Winter temperatures can drop as low as 0°F and snowfall can make traveling and hiking very difficult. Snowstorms often make the highways difficult and dangerous, especially if the driver is not familiar with winter driving or the vehicle is not equipped with good tires or four-wheel drive features.

DESERT TRAVEL/HIKING

  • Always carry water with you. You should carry at least one gallon of water per person. Water is scarce in desert regions and you will want to be sure you have enough, even for a day trip.
  • Always let someone know where you will be going and when you will return. Instruct a trusted friend or family member to call for help if you have not returned at an appointed time.
  • Dress for the climate. In the heat of summer, you will want to wear layered clothing as it slows dehydration and protects you from the sun. Wear good hiking shoes, and bring along sunglasses and sunscreen. If there is any chance you will be out overnight or may be caught in the desert after dark, make sure you have brought extra clothing for warmth.
  • Always keep a good, well-stocked first aide kit with you to deal with any injuries as finding medical assistance may require some hours travel.
  • Include matches and a working flashlight in your gear.
  • Since reaching many of the area's attractions requires traveling on secondary roads with long distances between services, take care to replenish food, water and gasoline often.

Simple common sense and preparation can keep your visit to the Grand Canyon area what it is intended to be- not only breathtaking, but also healthy.
