Safety

Due to the rugged terrain of the Grand Canyon National Park, safety should be at the top of your list of considerations.

  • When you are enjoying the view near or around the Canyon Rim, remember that there are no railings in places and it can be a multiple-story sheer drop off at times.
  • Watch your step! Many areas have no walkways or sidewalks even those areas away from the Rim.  Loose gravel and rocks can cause you to stumble or fall.  Again, watch your step!
  • Be aware that the altitude at the Grand Canyon may be higher than you are accustomed to.  Stay hydrated and do not exert yourself until you are acclimated.
  • Wildlife, especially the squirrels, can be aggressive and beg for food.  Do not feed the wildlife for your protection and for theirs.
  • Be weather aware.  Storms can sometimes come out of nowhere raising streams and rivers quickly.  There can also be sudden fluctuations in the temperature.
  • Drink water.  Drink water.  Drink water. Stay hydrated: If you are planning to explore the trails within the Grand Canyon, always bring enough water. If you are hiking down from the rim, remember there is no water until the Colorado River, a long ways down.

For emergencies, you can dial 911 from any phone in the Grand Canyon area.
