Since 1888 folks have come from miles around to see what the ruckus in Prescott, Arizona was all about.
Every year that ruckus gets bigger, the contestants more daring and bold. When the bulls, the horses, the clowns come to town...well, let's just say you'll want to see what's kicking up all that dust.
Since the first cowboy rounded up the first herd of cattle, rodeos have tested and challenged their skills. Since the rodeo began in the late 1800's, prizes have grown, attracting bigger and rowdier acts.
Events range from saddle bronco riding, bull riding, wild horse racing and even bull fighting. Only 125 south of the Grand Canyon, the World's Oldest Rodeo is a worthy addition to an unforgettable July vacation.
Rodeo is the spanish verb "to roundup." It wasn't until 1924 that the Prescott cowboy tournament was called a rodeo.
Along with being one of the world's oldest rodeos, the event also holds the illustrious status of having the world's oldest rodeo queen contest. In its second year, 1889, local women rode in a riding contest to win a saddle and bridle.
Tickets can be purchased online, General Admission gets you to the bleachers, which are usually covered. Box seats are down in front of the grandstand, closer to all the action. As can be presumed from its name, the Sky Box seats are up above, one the end and also usually covered.
There are afternoon and evening performances. Make sure to check out the other events in the family-fun hullabaloo called Prescott Frontier Days.
