Thoroughbred horse racing is never far away in Prescott, Arizona. Horses are a common site at Yavapai Downs, where the track is a site for sore eyes for most betting enthusiasts. However, it is also a source of fun entertainment and good food for those who visit from further afield or even abroad.
The local non-profit county fair group manages the Downs and facilities, but also provides extensive excitement for schools, community groups and civic organizations. In fact each year its two hundred acre grounds host a well of events and activities that go well beyond the reaches of horse racing alone. It is not uncommon to find sports shows, concerts or even fairs. However, the County Fair is one of the area's biggest draws besides the horse racing.
There are five main facilities at the track. The indoor arena is about as big as a major ice hockey rink, able to seat some five thousand people. It covers about sixty square feet, being especially popular with show jumping and other animal shows. The outdoor rings and arena are twice the size of the indoor one and can be expanded where needed. The main track is a standard size and is open for racing from Memorial Day to Labor Day. A section for stalls can house one thousand horses in one spot and up to two hundred in another. There is also a show barn.
The main grandstand covers over eighty-five thousand feet. It houses regular seating/standing room for over five thousand people, as well as party rooms, convention facilities and banquet ballrooms. Additionally an extra ten thousand seats can be made available during larger events.
