Munds Mountain Wilderness

The United States Congress selected the Munds Mountain as a protected wilderness (1984), covering some twenty four thousand acres of prime forest, mesas and towering mountains. It has become a prime recreation stop for many hikers and campers from across the state of Arizona. However, it is not so developed that it has lost is truly wild nature.

Declared a federally protected area in 1984, the Munds Mountain Wilderness in Arizona is renowned for its reddish-rock type formations, giving the illusion of strange images that are set against incredibly blue skies. Visitors are intrigued and hypnotized by its amazing wildlife, grassy mesas, rugged mountains and sandstone cliffs. However, they also come to partake in recreation opportunities that are truly exciting.

Munds Mountain Wilderness' mesas houses many beautiful creatures, including deer, bears and local squirrels that can be found no where else in the state. Mountain peaks rise to over six thousand feet, with fairly modest to precipitous slopes that rise up along what is known as the Mogollon Rim. The cliffs consist of sandstone outcroppings and sheer basalt ramps.

The wilderness' most attractive landmarks include the Bell Rock and the Courthouse. The famous Horse Mesa surrounds both Wood and Jacks canyons, which house varied water plant life. In the desert section, plains grass, sagebrush, chaparral, juniper forests and oaks encompass the landscape. Travelers can enjoy swimming in natural water pools, climbing rocks, bird watching, backpacking and hiking.

Located within a short drive from Flagstaff, the wilderness' trails draw a loyal crowd. The Hot Loop and Jacks Canyon trails, steer hikers away from the crowds, leading them slowly through undulating areas to some of the park's most exceptional viewpoints. The Hot Loop makes a 6 mile climb up towards the mesa, an easy route even for children. The Jacks Canyon Trail covers some four miles, rising steeply towards a very narrow section and meets up with the Munds Mountain Trail.
