Rules & Regulations
The Grand Canyon elevated to National Park-status in 1919. Since then, thanks to an organized system of rules of regulations designed to preserve this geological grandstand, the Grand Canyon has become one of the centerpieces in the National Park system.
Camping: Only allowed in designated campsites.
Fires: Due to fire danger, fires are only allowed in fire rings within Mather and Desert View Campgrounds.
Wildlife: Please do not feed any wildlife. If fed, animals like deer, bighorn sheep, coyotes and rock squirrels can become aggressive while begging for human food and have been known to bite.
Hiking: Please stick to designated trails only while hiking
Biking: Biking is perfectly legal and even encouraged. All paved and unpaved roads, including the park's Greenway Trail, are open for pedaling. They are not, however, allowed on many of the park's main pedestrian/viewing trails including the Rim Trail.
Hang gliding, Base jumping, Paragliding: Prohibited.
Enjoy but do not take: Removal of any rocks, plants, artifacts or fossils is strictly prohibited.
Pets: Pets must be leashed at all times while in the park. Pets are allowed in designated areas only including all developed areas as well as all trails above the rim along the South Rim.
Firearms: Any type of firearms, including air pistols and rifles, bows and arrows, crossbows, slingshots and all fireworks are prohibited.
