Primitive Campgrounds
While camping in any of the Grand Canyon's developed campgrounds is sure to provide a night filled with restful sleep in beautiful surroundings, outdoor enthusiasts are often looking for something even further from the beaten path in an even more natural setting. Luckily, Grand Canyon National Park has multiple undeveloped, primitive campgrounds for those wishing to spend a night out away from the crowds of civilization.
Tuweep Campground
For those wishing to move away from the fully developed campsites and explore something a little more remote, The Tuweep, or Toroweap, area can be found along the northern rim of the Grand Canyon. Although it requires a drive to access, this primitive campground is well worth the effort, with eleven rim-side campsites and spectacular views down to the Colorado River. The group site may be reserved, but the area is generally first-come, first-served. Fire grates and toilets are located at the campground.
Backcountry Camping
Although there are limited primitive campgrounds within the park, backcountry permits are available for those wishing to hike in and/or camp further from the main roads. Depending on the trail and area, there may or may not be designated, undeveloped campsites. While spending time in the backcountry, please be sure to follow proper backcountry hiking and camping practices.
