Hassayampa, a Yavapai word meaning "river that runs upside down," is fast becoming an Arizona golfing word for "if this course were any more scenic it would be a National Park."
Situated two miles outside of Prescott, Arizona this private course is the centerpiece of the Hassayampa Golf Community. Designed by Tom Weiskopf, Hassayampa, which opened in 1996, departs from the usual Arizona desert-course setting with an alpine look more associated with Colorado: towering ponderosa pines are the norm rather than the exception; views of the distant San Francisco Peaks are constant; and the air, at over 5,000 feet, is almost 20 degrees cooler than Phoenix's.
The course itself is short, but challenging, requiring much more than the usual grip-and-hit strategy. Aspen and Butte Creeks snake in and around the fairways, requiring you to either lay up or bring out the power stick. Greens are fast and tough to hold and most are protected by bunkers. And the fairways are narrow and usually leave you with either an up- or downhill lie.
The state-of-the-art clubhouse features spa lockers, a fine dining restaurant, and quick access to the fitness center which includes a swimming pool and tennis courts.
Caddies and carts are available. No denim is allowed and all golfers must wear collared shirts. For more information call (928) 445-0009.
