Forest Highlands, found in Flagstaff, Arizona, rates as one the few golf courses in the country that's aptly named. It has both forests and highlands, making it one of North America's most scenic golfing communities.
Golf Magazine rates Forest Highlands as one of the top 100 courses in the world, and Golf Digest has named it Arizona's top private course four times. This private community club features two 18-hole challenges. The hilly Canyon Course (opened in 1988), a Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish creation, winds through a thick pine forest, providing the type of scenery that makes most state park officials envious. The tight fairways are crisscrossed with mountain streams, making you think twice about whether to play it safe or go for the greens with Phil Mickelson-like abandon. Plus, you must take into account the course's 7,000 foot elevation, which some golfers say affect their shot selection by two club lengths. The Meadow Course (opened in 1999), another Tom Weiskopf vision, offers level fairway lies as it weaves in and around a series of meadows and wetlands.
Both courses are open from May through October.
