The Northern Arizona Book Festival is hosted every year in Flagstaff (AZ). This fest promotes a necessary union between literary fine arts and literacy in way that has meaning and relevancy for all Arizona people. In fact, since its inception in 1998, it has grown to include so much more, to include an entire year of related festivals and programs suited to all ages, not just locals.
For about 10 years now, renowned authors have flooded to Flagstaff for many weekends of workshops, literary programs, discussions and readings. In fact, it has become so popular with travelers and locals alike that it has become an annual institution in the yearly calendar of businesses and schools.
The list of writers is endless, as are the visitors. Major world names as well as Nobel Prize winners adorn its stages. Local celebrities and authors, even First Nation, open up a world of adventure to everyone who hears their creative words.
The local youngsters also have events specially designed for them. Every April, young authors get the opportunity to have a moment of fame in two festive events, 'Express Yerself!' and the 'Young Authors' Book Festival'.
Amazingly the whole downtown core becomes a magnet of activity. Events are held in historic buildings, as well as the university. Books to read and to buy are everywhere. However, the best part is that every event is completely free of charge and all proceeds from book and related sales go to helping those less fortunate souls who are either completely or fractionally illiterate.
