Flagstaff Nordic Center
Most Nordic or cross-country enthusiasts are very familiar with the Flagstaff Nordic Center, located just 40 miles outside the town. They enjoy incredible scenery, including views of the Grand Canyon (on clear days), whilst navigating their way through excellent snow conditions on the foothills of one of the area's loftiest peaks.
Flagstaff, Arizona, is only a short trip away from the famous Flagstaff Nordic Center, a fantastic location for skiing through the hills at the base of the state's tallest mountain. Not only does it provide superb cross-country facilities, but also supreme telemarking or Nordic ones, which have become popular with many lovers of the sports.
The Nordic Center is geared for ski-skating, as well as diagonal striding. Trails are designated according to skill levels (novice to expert). However, most fall into the intermediate range. Tours and support are provided for moonlit night tours, racing and varied workshops. Complete equipment rental and top quality instruction are offered for all age groups.
Center amenities are open from December to March, from 9am to 4:30pm each day, and staff recommend that any visitors call ahead to check the road conditions. If the snowfall has been heavy or roads cannot be plowed, road closures may be necessary. However, the center provides shops, clubs, daytime lodging and food and beverages.
It should be noted that backcountry trips are generally forbidden without prior permission. There are no campgrounds within the area, so patrons need to find accommodation either in Flagstaff, or further afield. However, staff can make some excellent recommendations.
