What to Bring

When planning your trip to the Grand Canyon, it is wise to spend some time determining what to bring. Of course, what you decide to bring is primarily dependent on what activities you intend to enjoy while in the area. Obviously, the gear needed for hiking or biking differs some from the gear necessary if you are planning to take an extended float trip on the Colorado River.

Plan ahead for your trip to the Grand Canyon. Depending on the nature of your activities while in Northern Arizona and the area of the Grand Canyon, it may be necessary to bring specific gear. Regardless of the activities that you have in mind, never forget that the weather can change unexpectedly so it is best to be prepared for all types of weather and conditions. Other typical gear would include travel accessories, clothing, sandals and shoes.

Other items that should be brought along regardless of the nature of the activities you plan on once you're here include –

• Plenty of waterproof sun block and sunscreen lip balm
• Hat or visor for sun protection
• Insect repellant
• Camera and carrying case
• A small day pack
• Lightweight fleece jacket or pullover
• Rain Gear

If you are planning to do some backpacking or taking an extended river-rafting trip, these additional items should be included –

• Storage size Ziploc Bags and Plastic bags (to separate dry and wet clothing)
• Full-Size Backpack
• Two Sport water bottles (at least one liter each) or a hydration system
• Towel
• Two pair quick-drying shorts
• Swimsuits
• Strap on sandals
• Hiking boots
• Light/short-sleeved quick-drying shirt (for hiking)
• Headlamp or flashlight & extra batteries
• Energy Bars, Trail Mix, Beef Jerky and Candy
• Trekking poles
• Camp/Travel pillow
• Toiletries
• Book or other reading material

The majority of the tour companies supply their clients with lists of "what to bring" so check with the company with which you have made plans. If you are planning on a self-guided backpacking trip, don't forget your sleeping bag, cooking utensils and food!

Always be prepared with a map, plenty of water and current rules and regulations regarding the use of the Grand Canyon Park area.
