The Wupatki National Monument is located in Arizona, not far from Flagstaff. It is home to an ancient Native American site that hosts ruins and a wealth of history, as well as exciting activities and numerous attractions. In combination with its neighboring attraction, many millions visit it each year, always finding something new to do.
With some of the highest number of visits to its region, the Wupatki National Monument is probably second in the position of popularity when in relation to its crater neighbor. However, it is much more than just a popular place to visit. It has varied attractions and activities that will delight and please even the finickiest traveler.
The main feature of the monument is its historical and archaeological site. In fact, throughout the park, varied settlements from ancient Native American tribes are dotted around, including home and farms of the Sinagua, Kayenta Anasazi and Chonina. The majority of them came because of a huge volcanic eruption that took place in the nearby Sunset Crater (11th c.). It covered the region in vast amounts of volcanic ash, but ironically, as is seen after all volcanic eruptions worldwide, the soil becomes enriched again and is considered to be the best soil for growing. It is believed that over two thousand people fled the disaster, taking shelter in the Wupatki area, and eventually remaining there to become farmers of squash and corn.
Though there are many homes amongst the ruins, some striking resemblances in cultural activities of ancient North American tribe's people become apparent. Like their Mexican natives to the south they had their own ball court and huge central building, the biggest and tallest of its kind during that time.
Otherwise, the park boast a wealth of things to do, including fishing, canyoneering, animal watching, hiking and camping. Though there are few campgrounds, many folk choose to take shelter under the forest canopy or inside nearby caves. Most hardened hikers wander along the many trails, sometimes extending their route to include the nearby Sunset Crater.
